Great Kiskadee, Costa Rica

🔍 Great Kiskadee | Pitangus sulphuratus 🐤

📍 Seen in Alajuela, Costa Rica 🇨🇷

💬 Speaking of a colourful description, the Great Kiskadee’s scientific name is the Pitangus Sulphuratus. Sulphuratus is derived from the word ‘sulphur’, which describes the yellow underside of the bird. Pure Sulphur is yellow. In addition, the Great Kiskadee’s “black mask” also serves a purpose – it works like the eye-black that athletes smear beneath their eyes which helps them reduce glare and assist them in hunting in bright light or where light reflects off water.
